Booklet Binding types
WIRE BOUND BOOKLETS
To fit the wire spine holes are punched down the spine edge of the paper and then the wire is threaded through these holes. Wire bounded has a series of double looks and is very commonly seen being the binding mechanism of education exercise booklets.
Also known as coil binding, spiral binding is similar in function to wiro binding except each page can open fully. Spiral binding is ideal for manuals, notepads, and conference notes.
Saddle stitch booklets
Saddle stitch booklets are by far the most common type of booklets that we do. Their clean look and compact spine make them very pleasing both visually and practically. They are often used for thinner magazine runs and instore catalogues. They usually have a maximum page limit of 64 depending on the stock being used.
Perfect bound booklets
Perfect bound books have a flat spine where pages are grouped together and glued to the spine. They are common for magazines that are too thick for saddle stitching and also have a clean book-like spine when stacked together.
Half Canadian is where a protective cover envelopes both the spiral bound spine and the paged contents. They are ideal for a more professional look.
Padding is where (usually) identical pages are stacked together and glued on one side to create a pad. The pages can be easily ‘ripped’ out as they are used.
Plastic comb booklets/Plastic coil booklets
Plastic comb and plastic coil booklet binding are very similar to wire binding with the pages having holes punched into them along the spine edge. Plastic coil binding (as well as wire binding) is useful for thick booklets that are handled often such as training manuals, instructions, and product catalogues. Plastic comb binding is less sturdy than coil and wire binding but is a cheaper alternative for booklets that are less heavily used.
